One essential aspect of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is social marketing. In simple terms, social marketing is an approach that makes use of ‘philosophy’ to pay attention to the specific needs of the target. This is done by gathering people with common interests, making it possible to create an interactive community. Through website technology including forums, blogs, outbound and inbound links, and social networking sites (Myspace, Facebook, Digg, etc.), social marketing becomes a convenient way to increase company gains.

In order to start right out in integrating social marketing strategies with SEO, a plan must be developed first. Moreover, there should be detailed research regarding the target’s needs, most especially since the approach is customer-oriented. It may also be helpful to consult with firms specializing in Internet Marketing. These firms will provide invaluable information and insights on how different approaches work together in maximizing company results. Once you have a better understanding of the various strategies, you can now employ the ones suitable for your needs.

Social marketing involves creating a community where people with shared interests come together to state opinions and ask questions. This can be done by setting up forums or discussion boards on your website. The key here is to generate interaction among the members of your target audience. A vast majority of consumers do online research before making any purchases; forums are helpful in providing information regarding customer inquiries.

Also consider setting up a blog that contains relevant posts that discuss the services and products that your company offers. The information that you will provide may be very well appreciated by your readers. Place links to other websites and blogs that relate to your blog content. Social networking sites including Facebook, Myspace, Digg, and many others might also have useful and interesting content that you can link to. Feature and subscribe to appropriate RSS feeds, so that your readers have a reason to frequently visit your site.

Moreover, it is necessary to keep the forum and blog posts updated and fascinating for people to read. Also remember to use optimized keywords or phrases naturally in your content and titles. Do not let your online community become sedentary; encourage readers to engage in discussions and exchange of fresh ideas and opinions. This way, search engines are more likely to index your site’s content, thus, increasing traffic.
With an effective plan and strategies in place, integrating SEO and social marketing is not a difficult task.

SEO is a continuous process which requires a huge amount of effort and time dedicated in regularly updating and revising a website. This can be a tedious work, most especially for beginners who are up against a very tight competition. However, through reliable companies that offer services for search engine optimization, even starters can get high ranking and increase traffic volume to their sites. All it takes is to choose the right SEO company to handle your needs and maintain your site. But how do you really know which company will provide the best services to your advantage?

First off, determine if the SEO company in question is able to gauge its own ability and giving its own rank as a company. It is best to know if the company positions itself as a reliable one, but still make sure to be wary of their proposals. Oftentimes, companies who assure to get your site fully optimized in just a span of four weeks are giving false promises and unrealistic goals. A dependable SEO company should be able to help you set realistic goals, familiarize you on how search engine promotion occurs and how positioning is calculated through algorithm.

Moreover, SEO involves a lot of technical jargons. The company must be able to explain to you what these terms mean in a straightforward and comprehensible manner.

When hunting for a SEO company, ask if they can provide you with analysis reports regarding your website’s ranking, design, content, etc. They should give you detailed analysis of your website in all aspects relating to elements that may affect indexing of your webpages.

Also ask for the SEO tools and methods that the company utilizes in keyword analysis and keyword search. Does the company use effective tools? If you are not too familiar with such tools, you can conduct research on the basic tools available for optimization. Ask about specific strategies that the company plans to employ for your site to get high ranking.

The company should also be able to know the significance of qualified traffic over plain traffic. One of your objectives is to increase traffic volume to your site. However, you do not want to get customers who just come across your site because of unrelated keywords. You get increased bounce rate–surfers visit your webpage then leave–rather than increased sales. Qualified traffic is your major concern; you want customers who are truly interested in purchasing products and availing services that your business offers.

A lot of people started implementing dubious means in an effort to push their rankings higher, often placing deceiving information in the tags. Meta tags are so susceptible to spamming that it practically renders the tags useless. Consequently, most of the major search engines like Yahoo and Google don’t really factor it in anymore when judging a website’s relevance and have altogether stopped using it as a criterion in determining site rankings.

There are also other hazards associated with meta tagging. Since the tags contain information about your website, this may potentially be used against you by your competition. They become familiar with the keywords you painstakingly chose and use them to promote their own sites. A poorly constructed meta tag can actually hurt your ranking chances and possibly get your website banned even if you didn’t intend to break any rules in the first place. Some people contend that you are better off devoting attention to title tags as search engines still give importance to them.

Are meta tags truly an unnecessary practice? While meta tags no longer determine how well a website does in search engine rankings, there is nothing wrong with continuing to use them provided they are constructed well and do not overstep ethical boundaries.

A meta tag contains a description of what your site offers and if it is well written, can entice visitors to click on your link. It may not boost website rankings but it is still a legitimate method of generating traffic. Plus if you do not write a meta tag for your website, the search engine will construct one for you and this might not be a wise move as you are the one who knows about your site best.

It is better to write a meta tag that accurately describes what you offer rather than sticking with a generic description of your site. If you do choose to continue using meta tags as an SEO method, there are certain things you must keep in mind. Do not make your tags too long and be sure your description matches the content found within your site. Put in relevant keywords and do not be repetitive.

The increasing importance of search engine marketing to online profitability has sparked debates in the industry on whether to use “natural” methods for SEO or opt for pay-per-click advertising. The ideal strategy would be one that incorporates both methods into the SEO scheme as they both have advantages and disadvantages to them. This is rarely the case though and for those that cannot quite decide on which course to take, the following is a rundown of the pros and cons of each method.

Organic SEO

Organic SEO is deemed more credible by people as popularity and traffic are gained through painstaking work and time investment. Your search engine levels are acquired on the basis of relevance and content quality. As long as your website keeps in line with search engine considerations, it continues to belong to the top search results.

Consequently, the results yielded by organic SEO are more enduring. It doesn’t adhere to a pre-planned timeline rather it is an ongoing project that is amended and improved over time. It is a constant part of the marketing strategy. Organic SEO also incurs relatively low costs especially if you implement it yourself. You also have complete control over the content of your website. You decide which data to use and post without interference from third parties so the quality of your content isn’t compromised.

On the downside, organic SEO results are not immediate. It may take a while for your website to see any meaningful traffic and the time spent waiting for these strategies to take effect may impact heavily on it s profitability. SEO is a complicated undertaking and if you are a neophyte in this industry you might inadvertently be putting your website at risk.

Pay-per-Click Advertising

The biggest draw of pay-per-click advertising is the near-instantaneous results. Traffic is driven immediately to your website as your link is prominently shown over the search engine. This attribute of pay-per-click advertising is especially attractive to websites that are starting out. Pay-per-click advertising is also easier and faster to implement because it is a fairly uncomplicated procedure.

A drawback is that pay-per-click advertising can be quite costly. Studies show that the rates for PPC advertising are rising and as more people visit your site, you pay more. There are also studies showing that people tend to distrust paid searches and are therefore less likely to click on these links compared to organic search results.

Link baiting is an important component of SEO and can spell the difference in the effectiveness of an SEO strategy. While some people consider it a somewhat underhanded practice, it is simply a more creative method of building links.

To the uninitiated, link bait is any content that entices users to visit a webpage. Link baits can come in many forms. They could be free tools, an article, an image, a puzzle, an invitation to join a contest – there really is no limit to what you can use.

Link baiting drives SEO results as this is a speedy and easy method of building links. It gets your website the attention it needs as more and more people learn about what you have to offer. If your link bait is clever enough, people will continue referring your links to others – and this is really akin to having other people do your work for you at no cost! Of course, an increase in traffic volume may potentially lead to higher profits.

Link baiting is also one of the factors that can increase your search engine rankings. The number of backlinks attributed to your site increases your chances of appearing in the top results page of a search engine. Now if your links are picked up by well-established websites, that will do even more wonders for your reputation.

The potential of earning long term results through link baiting is also a significant advantage of this technique. If your content is compelling enough, people will keep referring to your site for years and years to come. When you actively use link baits, you are building up an image, a reputation for providing useful data to the public. Even if you use link baits for special or seasonal events only, this doesn’t necessarily mean traffic generation ends once the event has concluded. A well thought out link baiting scheme leads to sustainable traffic, not just one time visits that won’t be duplicated once the curiosity has worn off.

For link baiting to contribute considerably to your SEO strategy, remember that your website must have a strong backbone and that backbone comes in the form of superior quality content.

Unless your website has something truly useful or relevant to offer, no amount of backlinking will boost your rank or maintain traffic over time. Link baiting sounds easy enough but it requires strategic planning for it to be effective.

While SEO has been implemented as part of the marketing mix for many years, a lot of people still do not wholly understand the ins and outs of this discipline. The intricacies of SEO can be very daunting which is why a lot of companies and webmasters look to hiring the services of SEO professionals. Following is a comparison between do-it-yourself SEO and those provided by an SEO expert.

Professional SEO Services

One of the biggest advantages there is to outsourcing SEO work is that this affords you the expertise that already exists in an SEO professional. An SEO professional brings proficiency in the field. And because they have an intimate knowledge of how SEO works they are also highly equipped to deal with problems associated with SEO. These fixes can be done faster than when you attempt to do them yourself.

They are highly knowledgeable in useful SEO tactics like link building and creating content that will help boost your ratings. These professionals have also built up relationships within the industry that you can take advantage of. Finally, because all these factors are present you ultimately are able to use time wisely. As you know, time delays can sometimes have negative effects on your campaign.

Disadvantages associated with professional SEO services have something to do with cost – it can be quite expensive to retain these services. Also, the proliferation of scam SEO services makes it difficult for a company to differentiate quality services from substandard ones.

Do-it-Yourself SEO

In contrast to professional services, an SEO campaign that is crafted and implemented in-house allows for considerable savings, especially for companies operating on a tight budget. It can be a very highly fulfilling endeavor since the more you devote time in designing and implementing SEO campaigns the more you learn. The thing about SEO is that it lends itself to tracking and recording so you are able to go back, re-evaluate and improve efforts. Soon you will have acquired enough knowledge as to be considered an expert yourself. Another reason why DIY SEO is attractive to a lot of people is that you have control over every aspect of your campaign, from planning and deciding what content goes on your website.

But as mentioned above, SEO is a complicated specialty and it entails a lot of time to get familiar with it – time that you may not really have.

1. Make sure you update all of the pages on your site frequently. Unchanged sites can be dropped by some sites and nobody wants to go onto a site and see something last updated in 2005 do they? It could be a good idea also to put a last updated counter so it shows to people you update it a lot so they will check back.

2. Allow customers and visitors to your site to be able to sign up for discounts and special offers. Put a form on your site to allow them to be able to sign up for a weekly, fortnightly or even monthly newsletter which they may be interested in.

3. Add a link to allow people to add your site to their favourites or send this to a friend, it will remind people about your site when they take a look in their bookmarks and think “Oh look, I wonder if this site has any updates”

4. Make your site stand out. Use a great brand with a great logo design so it sticks in peoples heads. Some of the best companies in the world have the simplest logos but everybody can remember them.

5. Make sure that your site is easy to find if people forget the address. I have wanted to visit a website but could never find it. The best thing to do is put links so users can add your site to social bookmarking sites, so even if their computer dies they will be able to find their way back.

6. Never spam anybody who has signed up for a newsletter. If people no longer wish to receive these then make sure you do take them off the mailing list. This makes you look respectful and that you are not a cowboy who will just spam peoples’ inboxes to try and sell their product or get the odd page view.

7. Make a “Whats New?” section. People will instantly go to this to take a look at what has recently been updating and following on from earlier they will like a site that is always updated and will probably come back to take a look at what is new and what has been updated.

8. RSS Feeds. Make sure you have one of these bad boys as they are amazing for repeat traffic. They will let people know what has been updated and when and if people have subscribed to them they are 99% likely to come back to your site when they see an update pop up on their RSS Reader.

Here are a few tips that will help you design your website for SEO:

More Text: Search engine spiders catalog words – not flash videos, images or other media. Therefore, make sure you have enough text in your web pages for search engines to index. If you’re going to use above-mentioned materials in your web pages, be sure to give them ALT tags (i.e. alternative text).

Relevant Keywords: The quantity of words is not enough; quality also matters. Thus, be sure to include relevant keywords in your web pages’ text. This way, your web pages will be indexed and filed under relevant keywords and people who are doing a search using such relevant keywords have a greater chance of finding your website. Be sure to use these keywords in the ALT tags mentioned above.

Internal Links or Site Map: The way your web pages are connected is important. Make sure that your pages are logically (and semantically) connected through your internal links. This makes it easier for search engines to index all of your web pages and using the right keywords. Moreover, be sure there are no broken links in your site.

Back Links: The links that point toward your site is also important – especially if they come from websites which are indexed under keywords which are relevant to yours (i.e. semantically related to the keywords you’ve used in your site). The higher the rank (importance) of the web pages linking to your web pages, moreover, the bigger weight your pages gain for SEO.

Anchor Texts: In relation to the above, it would be better if links pointing towards your site are actually anchor texts. An anchor text like “tank tops” that points towards your online apparel store is more important than a link that says “http://www.nameofyourstore.com.”

It does not matter what your business does, it will have competitors. If it is from selling baby clothes to web design there will always be people trying to be cheaper and better than you. If they are online they will be fighting with you for that number one spot in Google and to be able to beat them, you must know how to successfully compete.

Search Engine Optimization is a hugely important way in which you can compete with your competitors online but to be able to do these you need to know who you are up against just as much as you know about your products and services.

You have to take a look at competitor’s sites and come up with a list of all of the sites that may be selling the same thing or offering the same services. Look out for the ones at the top of search engine lists as these are the ones that are obviously doing well. While you are on the site be sure to take a look at the design, keywords used and anything else that could make this site the top of Google. You could also do a cheeky check of their back links with a back link checker to see where they are linked to, and maybe as for your link to be on there too.

When you have done your research you should then start to search for ways to increase the SEO Value of your site by thinking of better keywords that will be more effective, different content, maybe a new layout that is SEO friendly and anything else that you can think of to make you stand out above your competitor. This may take some time and it is not a one off, you need to do this regularly to stay better than the rest.

As well as trying to look at other’s ideas you should try to come up with things that your competitors haven’t thought of yet. Different and new ideas will increase your position and ranking but make sure this is tested and successful before you depend too much on it.

Keep going over your research findings and decide what is good and what is lame and keep an eye on what your competitors are trying out. If you know your competitors you are halfway to being a success.
